Specifications (4-PW)

  • Loft: 18.5°-43°
  • Lie: 61.5°-64.5°
  • Shaft Length: 35.75”-39.125”
  • Swing Weight: D1

Pros

  • Muscular design produces long distance
  • Impressive turf interaction
  • Stable through impact

Cons

  • Lacks workability
  • Has trouble with consistent gapping

TaylorMade’s new Qi Irons are an outstanding option for golfers looking to improve their distance and accuracy.

Classified as game-improvement irons, the Qi’s are muscular and incredibly stable through the impact zone.

Once we got these irons onto the range, we immediately noted how effortlessly they deliver power to the golf ball.

Behind the power of the clean energy transfer, we could focus on the fundamentals of our swing, helping to improve accuracy without needing to overswing.

These irons are an improvement on last year’s Stealth set. Although similar, they are more stable and produce higher MOI, helping the face stay square as it reaches the golf ball.

As a result, we found even our off-center strikes stayed true to our intended target line.

Ideal for mid handicappers but accessible for high handicappers and beginning golfers, the TaylorMade Qi produces the results you need to improve all aspects of your iron game.

  • Lie: 60.375° – 63.75°
  • Shaft Length: 35.75” – 39.125”
  • Swing Weight: D2

Pros

  • Produces extended carry with a steep landing angle
  • Very solid spin rates
  • Clean turf interaction

Cons

  • Better for distance than sophisticated shotmaking
  • Slimmer than most game-improvement irons

Callaway’s beautifully crafted Paradym AI Smoke Irons look incredible in the bag and perform even better on the links.

Delivering a nice mix of speed and high launch, they produce high-arcing shots that find the putting surface with spin.

These hollow-body irons are designed to help you get more from each swing, and during our testing, we found they were very successful in their execution.

The AI Smoke Irons are a bit slimmer than the traditional cavity-back game-improvement iron. While that might turn away some weekend warriors, we found it actually offered a more agile weapon from the fairway.

With a high, steep landing angle, the AI Smoke Irons offer plenty of spin to help you hold the greens with tighter dispersion.

Best for experienced golfers and mid handicappers, the AI Smoke Irons won’t crush your wallet. Considering their overall performance, we consider them quite a value for your money.

  • Loft: 18.5°- 42°
  • Lie: 62°-65°
  • Shaft Length: 36”- 39.25”
  • Swing Weight: D1, D1.5

Pros

  • Produces very fast ball speed
  • Tighter dispersion with elevated spin
  • Minimal vibration for improved feel

Cons

  • Tough to master yardage gapping
  • Lacks maximum workability

Cobra’s lightweight and highly capable Darkspeed Irons are a finely tuned race car on the links. These clubs provide more speed for your mid- and long-range game and deliver a premium feel and responsiveness.

With help from Artificial Intelligence, the Darkspeed Irons utilize Cobra’s patented H.O.T. Face feature to increase ball speed, spin, and forgiveness on your golf ball.

We loved getting these irons to the range and unleashing some absolute bombs toward the target.

Ball flight remains high and true with this set’s mid and scoring irons, helping dial in the perfect distance to make your birdie putts short and sweet.

As with most game-improvement irons, the Darkspeed Irons have some gapping issues. We also had a tough time getting maximum workability, but if you want long and straight, these irons certainly deliver on that promise.

Specifications (4-PW)

  • Loft: 20°-43°
  • Lie: 61.5°-64.5°
  • Shaft Length: 35.75”-39.125”
  • Swing Weight: D0

Pros

  • Easy, effortless launch
  • Very forgiving sweet spot
  • Shaped like hybrid for better turf interaction

Cons

  • Limited workability
  • Lacks feel and responsiveness

The Cleveland Halo XL Full-Face Irons offer a hybrid-like shape to provide better turf interaction and an easy, crisp launch to generate more ball speed and carry.

The wide-body irons are cheat codes for golfers who hate hitting regular irons.

The extra large head delivers outstanding MOI. The high MOI allows you to swing hard without worrying the club head will twist and force you to hit snap hooks.

Instead, the stable club head produces a high launch that stays on target, even when you make contact toward the toe.

We also absolutely loved the full-face groove system. Cobra offers more touch and forgiveness on full swings by taking the grooves from toe to heel on the face.

The grooves also utilize the HydraZip technology, which removes water from the face to improve contact and minimize the penalty of hitting a golf ball with a wet club head.

For the money of the weekend warrior, senior golfer, and high handicappers, very little can beat the Cleveland Halo XL Full-Face Irons in terms of value and performance.

Specifications

  • Loft: 52°-60°
  • Lie Angle: 64°
  • Shaft Length: 35.25”
  • Weight: D4

Pros

  • Increased swing speed with power for higher launch
  • Marvelous mid irons offer distance with improved turf interaction
  • Seven-iron starter set for incredibly low price, great for beginners

Cons

  • Heavier build can limit distance for slower swingers
  • Advanced golfers won’t find workability with this set

An up and coming equipment manufacturer, Lazrus Golf Irons has released interesting, high-value iron sets for the money.

The irons offer a wide sole that delivers terrific turf interaction, along with a wide face on each golf club that boosts forgiveness.

The steel shaft irons are solid and provide an excellent feel but certainly don’t have the workability of blade irons. These are straightforward clubs that do one job well; lift the ball and get it down the fairway toward the cup.

Starting with a 4-iron, the Lazrus iron set runs seven clubs deep, stopping at the pitching wedge.

You will have to add a few wedges and hybrids with this iron set, but as cheaper set-building foundation sets go, you could do worse.

While these Lazrus golf irons won’t win any performance awards for super a game-improvement iron, they offer a worthwhile alternative for a low price.

Specifications

  • Loft: 19°-60°
  • Lie Angle: 60.5°-63.5°
  • Shaft Length: 35.5”-39.625”

Pros

  • Progressive bounce and offset offer casual golfers more length
  • DualCor system makes the irons incredibly solid and stable
  • Angled top rail lowers CG for higher launch and MOI

Cons

  • Took time to find our distances with each club
  • Forged look doesn’t mean forged performance

PXG, known for their craftsmanship among professional golfers, has taken what they’ve learned and produced an amazing set for weekend warriors with the 0211 irons. Featuring a forged look, the 0211’s deliver impressive distance with each swing.

We loved these irons because of the roomy face that produces the ball speed that extends distance. The large sweet spot on the 0211s also increases forgiveness, helping keep your shot along the target line on off-center strikes.

The PXG set also features a progressive offset as the set goes to the lower numbered irons. The offset lets you see the ball clearly at the address and smoothly get under the ball at impact.

We have a couple of complaints about the set, most notably that we found it took quite a bit of practice before we could dial in our yardages.

Ball placement is crucial when gauging distance due to the high launch of the 0211s, so try to repeat the spot when seeing how far you hit the ball with each iron.

An excellent set for mid handicappers, the PXG 0211 irons deliver a solid experience from the fairway and rough with crisp contact and excellent spin inside 150 yards.

  • One of the best golf irons set on the market with high-quality design and exceptional performance

Cons

  • Great for mid handicappers, but advanced golfers won’t find workability here

The Mavrik Irons feature an Artificial Intelligence-aided design with the 360 Face Cup that adds flexibility to the face for enhanced forgiveness on off-center strikes. These golf iron sets also have tungsten weighting along the sole that boost launch.

The long irons offer moderate shot height with extended distance. But their muscle doesn’t sacrifice accuracy. On shots over 150 yards, the Mavrik Irons are highly capable of launching tall arcing shots that find the flag.

Sure to lower your scores with improved shotmaking ability, the Callaway Mavrik Irons are first-rate golf clubs that look like forged irons but play like the best golf improvement irons you’ve ever witnessed.

The iron also provides a wide sole that moves smoothly through the turf for clean ball-first contact that generates high launch with a steep landing angle that makes holding greens very easy.

What I love most about the Sim2 Max iron is the Cap-Back Design. By adding the bar across the back of the club head, TaylorMade stiffened the face to help maximize energy transfer to the golf ball.

Pros

  • Power Holes offer better energy transfer into golf ball

Wilson has created some outstanding game-improvement irons over the years, the D9 iron provides muscle and accuracy for mid and high handicappers.

The D9 offers speed and sophistication with a wide sole that provides high launch with extended carry.

My favorite feature of the D9 irons remains the company’s patented Power Holes that reside directly behind the face.

Like TaylorMade’s Thru-Slot Speed Pocket, the Power Holes increase face flex that improves ball speed with maximum energy transfer. The ball really jumps off the face of these irons, helping you generate more distance with high launch.

While these are not the flashiest of irons, the D9 iron set offers offset at address to help you get a clean look at the golf ball.

The Wilson D9 irons, available at solid price, provide remarkable consistency that offers premier repeatability for golfers that need it the most.

The RAM FX77 iron set provides a nice alternative to the expensive players’ distance sets you’d find on the shelves of most golf superstores. Made from stainless steel, the FX77 set offers a smooth, sleek appearance that looks great in any golfer’s bag.

On the course, I really enjoyed the craftsmanship of these irons. RAM included high-quality KBS Tour 90 steel shafts that provide better feel and responsiveness than most value sets.

The muscleback design also improves the launch and carry of each shot, something I really appreciated once I had spent some time with these irons.

The accuracy and workability of the FX77 shouldn’t be discounted either. I found that I could make the golf ball move as I wanted with this surprising set.

Available for a great price, low and mid handicappers can enjoy the all-around performance of the RAM FX77.

Cons

  • Less forgiveness than game-improvement irons

Callaway’s Apex irons offer premium performance for low and mid handicappers looking for a forged iron that won’t crush their wallet.

The Apex irons, a favorite of professional golfers, offer dynamic turf interaction to create mid-to-high launch with impressive spin rates.

These irons do provide forgiveness but it’s not as extensive as game-improvement irons. But if your handicap is under 12, chances are you’ll benefit far more from the features the Apex delivers to suit your skill level.

What I loved most about this set is the scoring irons. Not only do these clubs provide spin, but they are so buttery soft and highly accurate.

Buying Guide: How to Choose the Best Golf Irons

Inclusions

The inclusions of a golf set deal with the build of the collection. For example, most golf iron sets begin with a 4-or 5-iron because most amateurs like to play with hybrids.

By starting with this mid-iron, manufacturers can include additional wedges or create a sparse set that lowers the price and minimizes the number of golf clubs.

Another area of inclusion that most golfers need to pay attention to is the number of wedges included in the set. Most sets offer a pitching wedge, but other, more detailed sets include three wedges for golfers.

For beginners and higher handicaps, additional wedges will help lower scores.

Comfort

Every golfer needs to be comfortable with their golf iron set. For advanced golfers, the ability to work shots is vital to posting low scores, and that comes from feeling comfortable with their clubs.

For high handicap players and beginning golfers, a golf iron set needs to increase the speed and distance of shots, primarily with the help of creating a high launch.

The more positive results that golf irons provide, the more golfers at this level will feel a sense of confidence and comfort.

Irons that produce pleasing sound and feel also instill confidence for golfers while providing comfort to their game.

Technologies

Innovative technologies can help increase forgiveness, length and reduce sidespin for better accuracy inside 150 yards.

For golfers with a high handicap, the club’s innovations can produce more repeatable quality shots. Additional length and shot height are two benefits to playing with new golf irons. Cavity-back irons also produce these results for beginning golfers.

Elements such as feel, sound, and turf interaction are also greatly enhanced by well-made golf irons. When purchasing a new set, knowing how the clubs perform with regard to producing the shot height and high-quality speed is a huge advantage.

Material

The material used in a golf iron is vital to its overall performance. From the steel used to create the head to the weight of the shaft, each component plays a crucial role in the type of shot the club produces with each swing.

The golf iron shaft is also essential because stainless steel, although preferred by most golfers, is heavier than graphite. For golfers that need more club speed, a graphite shaft’s reduced weight can help add MPH to the bottom line.

The heavier the material used to create the head, the slower the club will move on the downswing.

Forgiveness

Typically, the wider and larger the face of the iron, the more forgiving it is for the golfer. Now, why that may sound simplistic, more times than not, it is true.

An iron’s forgiveness begins with the design of the club’s head. Everything from the sole, perimeter weighting, moment of inertia, zip grooves, top line, and leading-edge play a part in how forgiving the club is on each shot.

When a ball impacts the face at a point that is considered off-center, the flexibility of the face works to redirect the golf ball by reducing its sidespin and sending the ball on a straighter path.

How To Hit Golf Irons

YouTube video

Questions and Answers

When do you use an iron?

You can use golf irons in three different situations on the course.

The first use is off the tee box. An iron can keep the ball sitting nicely for a second shot when the fairway is short or narrow, although it may be a longer approach attempt.

A second use for an iron is on the approach shot from the fairway. The most common use of the iron is this scenario. Golfers use a set of irons from inside a distance of 200 yards as they provide better accuracy.

Finally, the third way to use an iron is through chipping, as the shallow loft angle helps provide a shallow arc and forward roll that offers distance control.

How long do golf irons last?

Golf irons can last up to ten years with proper maintenance, although the golfer can not take advantage of new technologies available to help increase accuracy and distance.

Updating golf irons can also happen if a golfer lowers their handicap to single-digit levels and wants to jump to more advanced irons. However, most serious golfers prefer to update their set of irons every 3-5 years so they can utilize the latest innovations.

For casual golfers, periodic updates to their golf irons won’t hurt their game but could prevent them from fully jumping into working to improve their game.

Where’s the sweet spot on irons?

The sweet spot of irons is on the hitting area, or where the grooves are located on the face of the club. This area produces the best results with golfers experiencing the most distance and speed when the ball connects with the sweet spot area.

On shots that drift toward the toe of the club, the golfer will experience diminished speed and reduced accuracy. The feel of the shot will immediately respond that the shot was not struck well.

In comparison, the feel and response of a shot struck with the sweet spot offer a clean experience without vibration.

What is a game improvement iron?

A game-improvement iron is designed to help mid and high handicappers gain more consistency for their golf swing. These irons typically share similar features across brands, such as oversized heads, wide soles, and a larger sweet spot.

Game-improvement irons deliver a shot shape that remains straight without much side spin, so the arc becomes reliable, although without much creativity.

For golfers struggling to hit the golf ball consistently, the game-improvement irons deliver better shot quality across the board, especially from shorter distances.

Low handicappers want shot-shaping capabilities from their irons, so they prefer blade or forged irons

How do I clean my golf irons?

To properly clean your irons, you need a soft wire brush, a bucket of lukewarm soapy water, and a towel to dry the club before storage.

The first step is to take the brush and remove all impacted mud or dirt from the grooves and crevices of the clubhead. Once the dirt is removed, you can simply dip the head of the club into the water, but do not submerge or leave the club in the water.

Instead, just wet the hitting area, grooves, and rear section of the head.

Next, while wet, take the brush and clean the head of the club. Cover the grooves once more to ensure that they are entirely free from any debris. After you completely clean the head, take the towel and remove all moisture from the head.

Again, the biggest mistake golfers can make when cleaning their golf irons is leaving them submerged in water for a long duration.

By leaving the hosel and shaft submerged in water, the player runs the risk of the glue that attaches both parts of the club becoming weak and breaking on the course.

Conclusion

There’s no better iron set for the money than the TaylorMade Qi Irons.

A vast improvement on last year’s Stealth set, the Qi collection offers an incredibly muscular design that creates quick, high launch with distance to burn.

When it comes to forgiveness, we loved how stable the face stays through the impact zone. The head doesn’t twist or snap shut. Instead, it stays square, helping off-center strikes maintain ball speed and direction.

Even though the price point is close to $1000, the Qi’s are an iron set that takes advantage of modern technologies cheaper than top-flight players’ iron sets.

Great for mid-and-high handicappers, the TaylorMade Qi Irons offer tremendous value in relation to its exceptional performance.
