Last Update:

One of the biggest areas of neglect for golfers is not fully understanding the importance of choosing the right golf ball for their game. Much like golf clubs have leaned on technology in recent years, golf balls have been calibrated to take advantage of swing speed to give the golfer more distance and less spin off the tee box.

Usually built with the help of a thin, but durable, urethane cover, the best golf balls on the market offer a combination of great value, long distance, high spin around the greens, long lasting durability and exceptional feel.

All the golf balls on our list are worth your consideration, but it is wise to take the time to understand why each golf ball is different and how a specific type of ball could lower your scores and increase your distance.

Here’s our choices for the best premium golf balls in 2020.

PROS

  • Pro V1 provides less spin off the tee for piercing distance that transforms
  • Excellent greenside spin for ultimate control from bunker or rough
  • For golfers with moderate to high swing speeds for better ball flight

CONS

  • One of the most expensive golf balls on market, not suited for beginners

Easily one of the best golf balls for any level of golfer, the Titleist Pro V1 has long worn the crown as the top golf ball for both professionals and amateurs. Not only does the Pro V1 deliver exceptionally great distance off the tee, but around the greens, there is no other ball that can match its control around the greens.

For the Pro V1, it all starts with the low spin from the tee box. The reason golfers want a low driver spin is because the ball will travel further with better accuracy and less movement that could cause slices or hooks.

The core of the Pro V1 is similar to the Pro V1x in that it is the foundation to one of the best golf balls ever created. The multi-piece golf ball also has a multi-layered core that produces low driver spin, high wedge spin for softer shots onto the green and exceptional distance gains for golfers of higher swing speeds.

The urethane elastomer cover on the Pro V1 is one of a kind and certainly worth celebrating. The cover resists drag while also giving the golfer the company’s patented and rights reserved  Drop and Stop control on the greens. There is no other ball that provides this type of greenside spin on the market, and it is one of the biggest reasons why all golfers find their scores dropping when they start playing with the Pro V1.

The Titleist Pro V1 is our choice as the best golf ball for mid handicappers, simply because of how easily it allows the double-digit handicap golfer to make the jump to the next level.

PROS

  • Low driver spin gives more distance with greater accuracy for shorter second shots
  • Softer feel from fairway and around greens with excellent wedge spin
  • Fantastic control with enhanced ball speed for improved short game

CONS

  • Better for low handicappers who like to work the golf ball

One of the best golf balls for advanced golfers is the Titleist Pro V1x. Slightly different from its brother, the Pro V1, the Pro V1x is the preferred golf ball by professional golfers because it provides a softer feel and more workability.

Everything you’ve seen with the Pro V1 is here within the Pro V1x. The soft cover provides unreal spin around the greens, but delivers that coveted low driver spin off the tee. For golfers that want a higher launch with more control, the Titleist Pro V1x is the ball to choose from both options.

The core of the V1x is one of the big reasons why it stands out ahead of the competition. The multi-layer golf ball is home to an incredibly fast core that provides the player with more speed, less spin off the tee, more spin into the green and the same quality and feel you’d expect from a premium golf ball of this caliber.

There are a few warnings for amateurs ready to take the step up with either the Pro V1 and Pro V1x. The first is that the urethane cover on both golf balls are softer to increase wedge spin and feel, but if you tend to put a few balls into the trees or on the golf cart path during your round, you’ll find that these balls cut easily.

For golfers looking to play their best golf, a golf ball like the Pro V1x will enhance ball flight, improve their short game and allow them to play one of the best tour golf balls ever created.

PROS

  • Increased swing speeds off the tee and from the fairway
  • Softer feel around the greens for better short game play
  • Outstanding forgiveness with improve dimple pattern to reduce side spin

CONS

  • Tour golf ball that doesn’t quite reach the heights of the Titleist Pro V1 and Pro V1x

Another excellent addition to our list of the best premium golf balls in 2020 is the Callaway Chrome Soft. Crafted as one of the best tour golf balls available, the Chrome Soft doesn’t reach the heights of the Titleist Pro V1 and Pro V1x, but it delivers features that all golfers need including improved greenside spin and increased ball speed off the tee.

Driving distance with the Chrome Soft is comparable to other top golf balls and produces the high speed that most golfers want from their premium golf balls.

The Chrome Soft also has an improved dimple pattern that reduces drag and side spin for better accuracy and straighter drives. From the fairway, several of our testers noted the higher launch on iron shots that landed softly with excellent stopping power due to the increased spin.

Around the greens, the Chrome Soft’s spin rate is outstanding. Even from sand or high rough, we were very impressed with the wedge spin generated by the Chrome Soft. This is a very good tour golf ball that might not match the best by other companies, but it’s slightly more affordable and well worth the look if you want better control around the greens.

  • Unique urethane cover with advanced dimple pattern increases distance
  • Consistent flight from tee to green with improved control and feel

CONS

  • Tour level golf ball is best served for mid handicappers and less for beginners and single-digit handicappers

The preferred golf ball of Tiger Woods, the Bridgestone Tour B XS is an affordable tour model that keeps your distance long and the feel of your shots high from anywhere on the course. Powered by a dual dimple pattern system, the Tour B XS provides the golfer with additional distance, spin and feel

One of the big highlights of the Bridgestone Tour B XS is the new patented and rights reserved SlipRes cover. Coupled with the previously mentioned dual dimple urethane cover, the golf ball increases friction for your short game shots and lands softly on the green for better accuracy.

A gradational core located within the Bridgestone Tour B XS provides longer yardage on shots with increased swing speed and lower driver spin. The core offers high compression for faster swing speeds that are looking for more distance from their drives.

The seamless cover on the Bridgestone Tour B XS is another proprietary innovation that allows for a more aerodynamic flow around the golf ball. The cover is one of the primary reasons why shots with the Tour B XS are consistent and reliable.

PROS

  • Tour-level urethane cover produces excellent spin and greenside control
  • Designed to provide exceptional distance on iron shots from fairway
  • Low compression core increases distance from tee box in golfers with slower swing speeds

CONS

  • Not an ideal golf ball for high swing speed or advanced golfers

The Srixon Q-Star Tour golf ball is a high performer, ideal for mid to high handicappers that want a ball with an advanced core that helps on the green and advances their yardage from the tee and fairway.

This low compression golf ball has an impressive foundation featuring a streamlined 324 speed dimple pattern that boosts club speed for players who struggle with getting their swing MPH over 80.

The high-quality urethane cover is coated with a patented and rights reserved Spin Skin coating that works as an accelerator for wedge spin for better greenside control and stopping power on the green.

This three-piece golf ball might not be as sophisticated as the best golf balls from Callaway or Titleist, but it packs a punch off the tee box while providing a soft core and enhanced feel, something you wouldn’t necessarily expect from a golf ball at this price point.

Our testers noted that in windy conditions, the Srixon Q-Star handled the elements better with more accuracy and forgiveness than other golf balls at this price point. While the golf ball’s compression rating might hold it back from boosting the yardage of your drives, it still brings impressive distance, especially from the fairway with your irons.

The Srixon Q-Star Tour provides great value for the mid handicapper looking to gradually improve their game without emptying their wallet. With the enhanced core and exceptional performance on the green, this mid-level golf ball is one of the best to consider for players looking for a great deal.

  • Advanced greenside spin when using wedges for better stopping power on green
  • Innovative skin coating on urethane cover increases friction for enhanced spin

CONS

  • Great for mid and high handicappers, low handicappers will want more sophistication from their golf ball

The Srixon Z-Star XV is a premium multi-piece ball that offers excellent affordability. The Golf Digest Hot List Gold level winner is a golf ball that packs a punch at a price that is little more than a lunch for two.

The best feature on the Srixon Z-Star is the company’s FastLayer Core. With its soft center that gradually becomes tougher on the outer layers, this ball is ideal for faster swing speeds. Golfers who can reach back and hit drives of over 250 yards would serve their game well by giving the Srixon Z-Star XV an opportunity to win them over.

A Spin Skin coating is one of Srixon’s excellent innovations that shows its use on the course. The coating covers the soft urethane cover to provide more durability while keeping the wedge spin that players love to activate with their sharp grooves. On shots entering the green, the Z-Star provides stopping power that rivals golf balls that cost twice as much.

An all-around great golf ball, The Srixon Z-Star XV utilizes its advanced 338 speed dimple design to provide more yardage with better accuracy off the tee. An excellent option for mid and high handicappers that want the performance of a premium golf ball without the price, the Srixon Z-Star XV delivers the goods with each shot.

  • Crafted to provide excellent consistency for beginning golfers
  • Highly durable with reformulated core creating more spin near the green
  • Low compression core lifts swing speed of high handicappers

CONS

  • Affordable and versatile budget golf ball best suited for high handicappers and beginners

Bridgestone is one of the best golf ball manufacturers on the market and their e6 line has been a popular model that has its fair share of fans. The new version of the e6 for 2020 has a redesigned core that accelerates ball speed for beginners who are discovering the need for more distance.

The e6 is a low compression golf ball, but Bridgestone has crafted a core that works to help the golfer who wants more yardage from the tee and fairway. For senior golfers especially, the e6 is a dynamic option if they are looking to buy one of the best golf balls on the market that is tailored to their game.

This two-piece ball won’t win any awards in the spin department, but on approach shots, our testers found the ball had a pleasant soft feel that worked well for its compression rating.

A structurally sound urethane cover prevents cuts and wears well over the course of a round. Whether you are on the 1st or 18th tee, the e6 is a high performer that continues to give the player a ball that maximizes yardage and works well around the green.

For beginners that want a better golf ball without paying the price of a Pro V1 and Pro V1x, Bridgestone’s e series is a great place to start their shopping and the e6 is quite possibly the best of the bunch.

PROS

  • Variety of color options give players plenty of choices for fun day on the links
  • Flexes a lot of muscle off the tee with exceptionally long distance
  • Low drag through dimple design gives tall ball height with soft landing

CONS

  • Not a sophisticated golf ball, great for hitting long and ideal for mid to high handicappers

The Callaway Superhot is an energetic golf ball built for distance and launch angle from the tee and fairway. The three-piece golf ball is pure muscle and while that might turn away golfers who want more delicacy around the green with their ball of choice, the Superhot is loud, proud and ready to set a few personal bests in the yardage department.

At its heart is a high energy core that drives yardage on iron shots and with the driver. Our testers loved the low driver spin off the tee box, allowing the golf ball to cut through the elements to reach for maximum distance.

The company was smart to design the Superhot as a three-piece ball, because it does allow the player to produce spin and the soft feel urethane cover does enhance the RPM that creates better spin rates with the wedge or from the fairway.

If we haven’t made it clear, this is not an ideal golf ball for low handicappers that like to work the ball along the fairway or into the green. Frankly, that excludes just about 10 percent of all golfers, so it is not a huge population affected, but worth noting nonetheless. For the remaining 90 percent of players, the Superhot can definitely add yards to your game, reducing the length of second shots substantially.

A blast to play, the Callaway Superhot is one of the best golf balls for the mid-level player worried less about their handicap while searching for more entertainment from their time on the course.

PROS

  • Exciting distance golf ball that increases shot speed and launch angle
  • Fantastic golf ball to upgrade your yardage and improve overall game
  • Improved aerodynamics streamlines the shot making ability of the Velocity

CONS

  • Simple two-piece ball that doesn’t have the grace of a Pro V1, but delivers the distance

The Titleist Velocity is the well known company’s answer to the two-piece monster distance market. While most two-piece balls designed for maximum yardage from the box lack sophistication, the Velocity has enough interesting features to keep even the solid mid handicapper engaged on the links.

The ball features a LSX core that has been enlarged to create more speed and muscle. While some of our testers felt the Velocity reached the distance peaks of most tour golf balls, they did note that the touch and feel around the green isn’t close to what they hoped for from this model.

One aspect we really enjoyed about the Velocity is with the high shot shape, we were able to routinely land softly on the greens with minimal backspin. While advanced golfers love having the shotmaking capability that provides for extra backspin, mid handicappers prefer a shot that sticks to where it lands. If that speaks to your golf game, then the Velocity provides that option in a dependable two-piece golf ball.

The Velocity is another distance golf ball that comes in a variety of several eye-popping colors such as pink and yellow to help you easily find it on the course.

If you are a high handicapper looking to offset your slower swing or a mid handicapper that would like an affordable golf ball with a few extra yards, then the Titleist Velocity will minimize the nicks and scratches commonly associated with two-piece golf balls giving it terrific durability over the life of ball.

PROS

  • Built for distance and feel with an emphasis on improving ball speed off the face
  • Newly designed core gives golfer more distance without sacrificing feel
  • Unique dimple design is aerodynamic for more launch angle and shot height

CONS

  • Meant to be a step below the Pro V1 tier, better for mid handicappers and not scratch golfers

The Titleist AVX golf balls aren’t much cheaper than the Pro V1 series, so it is reasonable for any golfer to expect performance that rivals the best golf balls money can buy. While there are subtle differences between the two models, the AVX does well at keeping its reputation as one magnificent golf ball that may sacrifice a few features, but provides the golfer with outstanding distance and ball flight.

The newly redesigned AVX is built with thinner urethane covers than previous versions for more control on entry shots into the green. The new cover is a revelation that certainly shines when the golfer gets the wedge into their hand. The shot-stopping power alone makes this second-tier golf ball one of the best golf balls at this price point for improving your overall game.

We noticed that the redesigned AVX also showed a bit more distance than we were used to seeing out of previous versions of this golf ball. That added yardage was an unexpected surprise and once we recalibrated our expectations for each club, we found that the golf ball is also very accurate.

While the Titleist AVX might not get the attention of its Pro V1 counterpart, this is a fabulous golf ball that is more affordable but delivers outstanding performance for the advanced golfer.

PROS

  • Two-piece design is crafted to improve spin from fairway and on the green
  • Soft core helps with increasing spin on wedge shots from sand and rough
  • Plays well with slower swingers who need their distance with a level of sophistication

CONS

  • Soft cover and core depress distance but offer the inexperienced golfer more control and spin

Srixon, not wanting to be left out of the soft golf ball genre, has improved their addition with the company’s Soft Feel golf ball. Not only does the Srixon Soft Feel register higher spin rates and longer yardage than most in this class of golf ball, but we found during our testing that it was more precise when it came time to launch shots at the pin.

Be forewarned, this is a two-piece ball and while mid handicappers might shy away from a golf ball with this specification, Srixon has designed the Soft Feel to maximize ball speed after impact without leaving touch or feel behind.

The company has given the Soft Feel a 338 speed dimple pattern for drag reduction and more lift and launch angle. In windy conditions, the Soft Feel outperforms most two-piece balls with jaw-dropping accuracy.

Near the green, most two-piece balls figuratively fall apart with low spin, but that’s not the case with the Srixon Soft Feel. An excellent golf ball from tee to green, the Soft Feel is a dazzling option for the mid and high handicapper who needs an affordable golf ball that doesn’t lose its edge.

  • Built for slow swing speed to help with forgiveness and response
  • Three-piece golf ball that offers less drag and improved aerodynamics

CONS

  • Softer golf ball that may inhibit distance for slower swings, but helps with control and spin

Bridgestone is known for crafting some of the best golf balls that amateurs have ever seen and their three-piece e12 Soft golf ball is another fine addition to the e-series family. Designed for players who need help with ball speed, the e12 Soft is better than your average two-piece soft golf ball by providing higher velocity off the club face with a core that is energetic to drive yardage from anywhere on the course.

A revised dimple system gives the e12 Soft less drag and improved aerodynamics for less wind volatility. The advanced cover helped the company soften the core for better feel and spin around the green.

For golfers whose swings reach 105 MPH, this golf ball is probably not right for your game, but if you are below that speed threshold, then the e12 can deliver an all-around pleasing performance.

Available in several bright colors, the e12 Soft is another golf ball that Golf Digest has deemed worthy of Gold recognition in their annual Hot List. Well worth a look from moderate golfers looking for an affordable multi-piece golf ball, the e12 Soft is another fun and high performing golf ball from Bridgestone.

  • Low drag dimple system plus a Dual-Spin cover create breathtaking distance
  • Four stiff layers around the core give the ball more carry and control from long distances

CONS

  • Elite-level golf ball that is made for elite players who can craft shots

With golfers facing the choice between so many elite level golf balls, TaylorMade has tried to reduce the confusion with a streamlined tour golf ball named the TP5x. Built with five layers, the TP5x utilizes each layer to create one of the most stunning golf balls we’ve seen in quite some time.

It all starts with the Tri-Fast Core on the TaylorMade TP5x. The core delivers exceptional distance with terrific carry. Around the core there are an additional three layers before we reach the cover.

Each of the three layers adds another component of what makes the TP5x highly durable without sacrificing anything that is important to the golfer. Spin, distance, and feel is all here in this complete package that sent our testers raving moments after completing their rounds.

Before we forget, we must note that the cover is made from a new high flex material that the company calls HFM. The cover works as a spring at impact giving the golf ball more rebound. This new feature on the TP5x is ultimately about creating more ball speed for additional distance.

When compared to the other models in the top tier of the best golf balls in 2020, the TaylorMade TP5x is a brilliant innovative effort that dazzles from tee to green.

  • Lower spin with driver for less slices and hooks and more accuracy
  • High speed off the club face ranking it alongside best golf balls on market

CONS

  • Expensive golf ball that may only attract the advanced player

Callaway touts the Chrome Soft X as a modern tour ball and we can’t say we disagree with them. This multi-piece golf ball is worth its weight in gold with a host of features that are tailored for the low handicapper who knows their way around the golf course.

The large SoftFast Core is the engine that drives this golf ball to be one of the best. Not only does the core deliver increased ball speed and distance, but also keeps it accurate in windy conditions and promotes elite level spin.

A thinner urethane cover offers an assist to creating lower spin rates off the tee box, while enhancing the spin rate once you grab a wedge and try to stick it close to the hole. A high trajectory launch angle is the name of the game with the Chrome Soft X, helping the golfer dial in that perfect distance for precision play around the green.

If you are in the market for a golf ball that excels at workability, then the Chrome Soft X is every bit worthy of your consideration as its Chrome Soft brother and the dynamic Pro V1 duo from Titleist. Crafted for the professional, but accessible enough for the amateur, the Callaway Chrome Soft X is one extraordinary golf ball.

PROS

  • Enjoyable golf ball to play with several color options
  • Soft feel and moderately good accuracy with long irons and wedges
  • Four-piece golf ball with fantastic spin rates for mid-range price point

CONS

  • Better served for players with high speed swings and long driving yardage

The Volvik S4 has taken its place as a niche golf ball that works well for hard swingers who like to let it rip off the tee box, but leaves beginning golfers out in the cold with the high compression rate.

That said, this four-piece ball can surprise you if you are willing to give it a chance and if your swing routinely drives the golf ball over 250 yards. While that threshold might not be the majority of golfers, the Volvik S4 is a competent golf ball we found to be very durable over the course of the round.

The ball is built to be high launch with low driver spin for better accuracy, even when you hit the golf ball off-center. The 90 compression rating does kick out beginning golfers and seniors with slow swings, but for the mid to low handicapper, this golf ball shines in several important departments.

It is hard to find a multi-piece golf ball that strives to be more for the golfer at this price point, but the Volvik S4’s attempt at finding a niche of players isn’t for nothing. With a soft feel around the greens and exciting distance with the driver, this is a golf ball that is worth searching for if you fit its qualifications.

Testing Protocol & Criteria Used For Evaluation

Criteria #1: Value

Every golfer is conscious of the price of all their equipment, from their attire to their clubs. The same holds true for the quality and cost of the golf balls that a player brings to the course.

Advanced golfers love to play with golf balls that have softer feel, consistent ball flight, and extra distance. Golf balls such as the Titleist Pro V1 is considered to be the standard for this skill level due to its high quality construction and complex dimple pattern that encourages higher launch and less spin that creates slices and hooks. This level of golf ball is best for single-digit handicappers but doesn’t provide the value that lower priced balls can offer. But most golfers of this skill level are willing to pay the cost of the V1 and Pro V1x balls from Titleist because they offer the best performance.

Mid and low handicappers are far more willing to play two piece golf balls because of their value. These golf balls might not provide the soft feel and ball speed of multi-layer balls, but they do offer durability with a strong urethane cover that wears well over time.

Criteria #2: Distance

Most golfers want to increase their distance with the help of their driver’s technology and the quality of the best golf ball that they can afford.  To maximize the distance of your drive, you need to find a golf ball that has consistent flight with low spin that can cut through wind and deliver a straight shot down the heart of the fairway.

It is important for a golfer to maximize their swing speed to gain maximum distance off the tee box. The best golf balls for distance usually combine a strong urethane cover with an innovative dimple pattern. For slower swing speeds, lower compression and low spin golf balls offer more distance with better accuracy.

For older golfers, low compression golf balls help with a lower swing speed. While all golf balls don’t offer their compression rating on their covers like they did a few decades ago, it is important to understand how high or low compression golf balls affect ball flight.

While having a high speed swing usually equates to accelerated ball speed, knowing that you are playing with the best golf ball that provides excellent value and performance is vital to lowering scores and becoming the best golfer that you can be on your day on the links.

Criteria #3: Spin

The spin of a golf ball is vital to its control. Whether the ball is on the fairway, in the rough or around the green, the best golf balls have a soft cover that enables maximum spin as the grooves grab and create friction to spin the ball.

Off the tee box, the spin of golf balls controls ball flight and provides extra distance. Regardless of whether it is considered a soft golf ball, golfers can expect to see low spin behind the strength of their tee shots to slice through the elements by increasing ball speed and reducing the length of your iron shots.

On approach shots, the urethane covers on golf balls help with launch angle and add a soft feel that lands with solid spin regardless of the speed. The quality of the greenside spin is the quality that most advanced golfers look for in their regular golf ball, while mid handicappers and beginning golfers are more focused on speed and feel.

Around the greens, the spin of the best golf balls are important for stopping shots close to the cup. A golfers’ short game is essential to keeping scores low and the golf balls that offer soft feel and enhanced spin are coveted by all levels of golfers.

Criteria #4: Durability

The durability of a golf ball contributes to how long a golfer can play the ball and experience the soft feel from the fairway and high spin around the greens without a loss in quality. Even though most players are focused primarily on feel, spin and distance with golf balls, the cover of the golf ball is one of the areas that signals the overall health of the golf ball.

But a truism that most players need to embrace is that even with a softer cover, however, a golf ball can be durable while offering the golfer more spin. Golf balls like the Bridgestone Tour series offer durability in an affordable package. Other golf balls like the Titleist AVX duplicate the sought after soft feel feature while maintaining a durability that goes unmatched by other balls at their price point.

Having characteristics such as a soft core or lower spin off the tee box, doesn’t necessarily guarantee that the golf ball will quickly lose its strength after a few holes. Manufacturers have gone to great lengths, with the demands of the amateur in mind, to find the ideal balance of a golf ball that produces excellent wedge spin, while not cutting easily like some soft cover balls can be prone to do on occasion.

Criteria #5: Feel

The feel of a golf ball is definitely one of the most subjective features of a golf ball. Every golfer has their own take about how a golf ball’s feel impacts spin and distance. Sure, most golfers want a golf ball that has excellent workability and response, even if that means they are sacrificing yardage, but with manufacturers producing balls with low driver spin off the tee, many players don’t believe they lose much yardage over time.

If you were to poll low handicappers, the feel around the greens with their preferred golf ball is the single most important feature they consider before selecting the right ball for their game. While beginning golfers want more distance off the tee, experienced players know that the feel of a golf ball and how it responds to a variety of different shots is what lowers scores and makes for a special day at the course.

When testing golf balls, we wanted our testers to focus their energy on putting the ball through a battery of swings that demand feel in order to succeed. From the moderate pitch shot to the 150-yard high fade, each shot needed feel and touch to be successful.
