10 Best Golf Bucket Hats
EINSKEY Sun Hat for Men/Women
Best Overall Bucket Hat
This hat is perfect for golfers that need some flex in the fit of their hats. For the ultimate fit the hat is designed with an elastic band at the base of the crown and another adjustable neck draw cord. The sides of the crown are designed with two mesh vents to maximize breathability and keep you cool longer.
One of the drawbacks is the waterproof material is made of a heavier polyester that tend to be warmer than other non-waterproof material blends. The waterproof material may keep the moisture on your head instead of wicking it away like other performance materials and hat models.
Gives the Best Fit Possible
The polyester material is designed with an elastic band to make sure the hat fits once you put it on. In addition to the elastic band in the crown of the hat, the polyester is designed to be more flexible for golfers that don’t have a standard head size. Other bucket hats with stiff brims can be constrictive regardless of material weight.
This hat focusses on heavier materials for durability, waterproofing, and UV resistance but doesn’t sacrifice the fit and comfort with a rigid brim. For golfers that have a lot of head movement and can’t seem to get a hat to stay on their heads, this one won’t fall off. The addition of a neck draw cord can help nestle the hat comfortably below the chin.
Sun and Water Protection
This hat is designed to keep you dry and out of the sun during your round. A heavier polyester material blend makes it more waterproof and better sun protection than other lighter versions. The large flexible brim allows you to adjust the hat and not have the rigid brim when in your backswing.

Unlike polyester or cotton bucket hats, the manufacturers used nylon and a nylon mesh to keep the hat lightweight and also resistant to the sun. Nylon doesn’t degrade over time with exposure to the sun but is susceptible to creasing and folding when traveling with the hat.

Using nylon as a hat material for sun is a logical choice considering it’s UV resistance properties and durability compared to other fabrics. Nylon allows golfers to not have to worry about buying a new hat frequently because of the durable nature of nylon. The crown is made with a 360 degree spanning nylon mesh for better breathability and ultimate cooling for hot days on the course.
Lightweight Sun Protection
Since the nylon is a lightweight material and the crown is designed with a very open nylon mesh at the crown the hat is very lightweight. Nylon on it’s own is closer to a silken material meaning it is naturally lighter than polyester and cotton. The major benefit of nylon is its resistance to sun means it naturally has UV protection, this particular model is rated at SPF 50.
The three inch brim maximizes neck and face coverage and keeps the sun off your body. Overall, the nylon and nylon mesh blend keep the hat light as air and the large brim keeps the sun off your face for an enjoyable cool round.

One Size Fits Most NEW: The Weather Company Golf Rain Hat
Oversized Brim and Simple Hat
This hat is perfect for golfers that need an oversized brim without a lot of other features. The oversized brim is perfect to maximize sun protection on the neck, shoulders, and face. An adjustable elastic band in the crown of the hat helps with the one size fits most drawback of the hats design.
Without a venting system in the crown of the hat and a one hundred percent polyester blend, this hat can get hot in the summer. Also, polyester doesn’t lend itself to wicking away moisture and is more likely to trap sweat under the hat. The durable material design will keep this hat available for years.
Sun Protection with Heat Trade Off
The oversized brim is perfect for protecting the sun neck and shoulders without adding a lot of weight. The flexible brim means there is not as much material to weigh the hat down. On the other hand, the full polyester design means the hat will capture and retain heat much more than cotton and other less heat catching materials.
Additionally, there are some concerns with the lack of a venting system at the top of the hat. Polyester hats can be cool if the venting system is properly designed to keep golfers cool.
Minimalism and Sun Protection
This hat has a simple elastic band in the crown of the hat to help keep the one size fits most design appealing to a larger group of golfers. If more sturdiness and fit is needed, consider another model with a neck strap as well.
However, the elastic band works in conjunction with the friction created from the polyester to keep the hat on your head. The oversized brim keeps the sun off the face without a lot of other design features. The biggest drawback is the combination of the full polyester material design and lack of venting that can capture sweat and heat.

The hat is built with polypropylene which differs from polyester slightly but keeps you more cool and waterproof at the same time. The elastic cord is easier to adjust than most other cords and can be done while you are still wearing the hat. A moderately sized brim allows for sun protection on all parts of the face and neck.
The idea behind this design was to make sure the hat could be folded and crushed to almost be transported in your pocket. Since the material used is polypropylene, golfers get benefits of durability and flexibility.
The hat folds up easily but also returns to form without compromising the structure and form of the hat. The concerns of fit are mitigated by the elastic band in the crown of the hat similar to other bucket hats to control for fit. A concern with this hat is the one size fits most, which may be an issue for some people looking for golf hats.
Lightweight but Flimsy
Because this model is designed to be crushable and portable, the is more flimsy without as much rigidity to the design. For golfers looking for a more robust brim for guaranteed sun coverage this hat may come up short. The portability is a great bonus because you can put this in your pocket and travel easily.
Also, without a venting feature the hat would sit somewhat heavy if it weren’t for the materials design. The important takeaway is this hat is built for portability and golfers will sacrifice a rigid brim and venting features for a travel friendly hat.
The Game Greg Norman 2017 Straw Hat
Greg Norman Label Hat for Golf Fans
This hat is for golfers are looking to mimic the classic Greg Norman shark hat. The ultra breathable straw hat construction increases breathability keeping you cool on the hottest of days. the large brim is designed to keep shade on the face and neck but does not offer a significant SPF rating because of the material used for the hat.

Greg Norman probably wore this hat because of the straw keeping his head cool during the sweltering heat of the PGA tour. The ultra airy straw construction hat has several weaved holes at the crown of the hat to maximize airflow and keep golfers cool. Straw unlike other synthetic materials is very lightweight and weaved construction means there’s more air to the hat then material.
This hat will sit on top of your head very light and you may not even notice that it’s there. Without any rigid constructive materials are heavy brim, the hat is extremely breathable and very lightweight.
Not Very Functional
The straw constructed hat without any other material binders such as polyester spandex or cotton does not lend itself to be in the bag for a traditional everyday golfer. Without any adjustment functions such as a drawcord around the brim or the neck the one-size-fits-all most may be frustrating to golfers especially during the hot summer months when hats are prone to fall off during the backswing.
The straw construction density great faster than other synthetic materials when it gets wet and meeting you may have to either buy another hat or deal with warped straw moving forward. Overall between the material type and lack of adjustment features this is not a very functional hat.
Stetson Men's Fairway Bucket Hat
Simplistic Classic Looking Bucket Hat
This hat is for golfers looking for a classic designed bucket without much other features. As far as simplicity goes, this hat is easily the most simple. There isn’t a an elastic band or neck draw cord to adjust the hat in the case golfers need to make adjustments. The one saving design element of this hat is a deeper crown that allows you to pull the hat down further to get some more surface area.
The cotton and polyester blend can get warm and tends to absorb more water than other synthetic blend materials. Designers took into consideration of the cotton and polyester blend and made sure to make the material more water repellent so the moisture doesn’t get stuck in the hat.
Simple Hat, Classic Look
The retro single band around the crown of the hat gives golfers the classic bucket hat look without a lot of other features. Lacking an elastic band strap to make adjustments or a neck draw cord, this hat won’t work very well to stay on your head if you are playing in the wind and the sun.
Otherwise, this hat has a simple brim that will cover a good portion of your face and neck from the sun. The cotton and polyester blend make sure to keep your ears safe from any UV rays since the material is thick enough to resist the sun.
Portable but May Have fit Issues
Because this hat doesn’t have an elastic band or neck cord so golfers will need to measure themselves properly prior to purchasing a hat. Luckily, this isn’t a one size fits most model and has several different sizes from small to extra large.
Cotton and polyester are very resilient materials meaning this hat can be folded and crushed to be put into your golf bag for on the go rounds. Although the portability of this hat makes it a bonus, golfers should look for other options if they need a better fit or want more material features.
Testing Protocol & Criteria Used For Evaluation
Criteria 1 – Sun Protection
Sun protection has two components, the size of the shade and UV protection. For golfers, playing in climates with lots of sunny days it is important to stay protected for as long as possible. The size of the shade will come down the brim width from the crown of the hat, larger the brim, larger the protection area. This way golfers can keep not only their faces from getting burned, but also their neck, shoulders, and upper chest area. Bucket hats are especially ideal for sun protection because they go over the ear and extend protection to the neck.
The second criteria, UV protection, helps prevent burning and having to dip into your bag for screen that can get greasy in your hands. Many well constructed hats will have some type of UV protection but hats made of straw or with more mesh will not have the added UVA and UVB protection.
Criteria 2 – Fit
Under the sun, golfers tend to sweat in the summer, the last thing you need is your hat sliding around during the backswing. This is one of the most important all around categories to consider when buying a hat, if it doesn’t fit or isn’t adjustable, it isn’t likely you will enjoy wearing it. There are several different considerations when looking into fit. Adjustable features, such as neck or head elastic bands, garner a higher score in this category because they lead to a more flexible fit.
Additionally, the material of the crown and brim is important to the fit. For instance, more rigid materials in the brim can translate to a stiffer fitting hat that may only fit certain size heads. Finally, the type of material is critical to the fit. More elastic materials like spandex and polyester are able to expand and contract to “mold” around the head.
Criteria 3 – Material and Construction
The difference between a high and low quality hat is durability and comfort. Lightweight hats are better under the sun but there is a line where lightweight becomes unwearable. The perfectly constructed hat is rigid enough to allow the brim to function properly, but flexible enough to conform to golfers heads. If the material used is to heavy, like leather or some high density polyesters, it can attract and retain heat causing discomfort mid-round. Materials that encourage wicking and dry quickly help keep the head cool without adding too much weight.
Considering these are sun hats, the material has to be durable to withstand both heat and moisture. Bucket hats that can be washed without degrading are perfect for summer sun and temperature. Lastly, any material like spandex or elastic that helps keep the shape of the hat over repeated uses is best for not only the fit but keeping the hat immobilized on your head during the backswing.
Criteria 4 – Breathability
Large bucket hats that aren’t designed with some porous sections will leave golfers feeling overheated as the sun beats down on their heads. Straw hats and other mesh designed crowns offer the most breathability and best for keeping the heat from the sun to a minimum. Many synthetic designed hats will have partial or full crown mesh or perforated sections to keep air moving over your head. Another factor in breathability is the hats overall ability to move moisture from your head.
The optimal hat will have some type of well designed venting system, either meshing or perforations, and material that promotes moisture wicking. This combination of design features keep air and moisture moving over and away from the body keeping the space under the hat cooler for an entire round of golf.
Questions & Answers
What characteristics should my golf bucket hat have?
Ultimately you want a hat that can protect you from the sun and heat. A well constructed hat with a some type of venting system either mesh or perforations specifically designed to move air through the hat and over the head. A brim that is large enough to block the sun but not too big to get in the way of your round, typically 3-4.5 inches is an optimal range depending on the brim material rigidity.
Finally, you will want to have some type of adjustment strap either around the neck or band that sits at the base of the crown. Unless you know the exact fit of the hat, these adjustable straps allow golfers to make adjustments to their hat mid round or as their hairstyle changes. Additional features include wicking material, washable, and waterproof/resistant, these together will help with the longevity of the material.
What material are golf bucket hats made out of?
There are a few main materials that most bucket hats are made out of polyester, spandex, cotton, and straw. Each has its advantages and drawbacks. For instance polyester is best for durability and UV protection but can overheat if not properly paired with a venting system.
Spandex, is included in many golf hats in the either the base of the crown or straps to add the stretchy characteristic that leads to a better fit. Straw is the lightest of the materials and has the best breathability but is typically rigid and hard to shape. The more flexible the material and hat design, the less likely the hat will be stuck on your head but the better the fit will likely be.
Is the drawcord elastic?
On most hats yes, for some models with an internal band, it can range from a more stiff plastic material or other synthetics. Bucket hats with the cords around the neck can be made of woven cotton with a plastic bead to adjust the fit of the hat on the head. Most elastic cords are threaded through the crown of the hat near the base where the brim is connected for the most comfortable fit.
The elastic is perfect for this type of fit because it works like a rubber band, once you pull it tight around the head, most hats with a locking mechanism to it in place. Elastic is a good material because it is resistant to water and heat but over repeated use it will stretch out. A good tip is when you aren’t wearing the hat release the tension in the elastic to avoid stretching it out.
Are golf bucket hats moisture wicking?
Most materials like Nike’s Dri-FIT material are moisture wicking. Bottom, spandex, and straw do not have good moisture wicking properties. Materials like cotton, polyester, and nylon are not typically moisture wicking. The greatest benefit of moisture wicking materials is it will keep you head dry and will make you cooler. The process of sweating can actually be enhanced by purchasing a hat with moisture wicking materials.
In addition to moisture wicking, a well ventilated hat will help keep you cool during those summer rounds in the punching heat of the sun. Moisture wicking materials doesn’t necessarily need to be a primary concern but it is a benefit in warm climates. In the guide we look at different models and whether or not they are moisture wicking.
How do I pick a proper size for my hat?
For most hats the best process is to take a quick measurement of your head. What you want to do is take a tape measure or piece of string if you don’t have a flexible tape measure. Take the string or flexible tape measure and wrap it around the widest part of your head. Many times this will be halfway up the forehead over the ear line and wrap it around your head. This will tell you the circumference of your head. Using the string, you can mark from the end to where your fingers meet and measure the length of the string.
Once you have this number you can look at the dimensions of the hat to find the best fit. For models with the one size fits most, as long as your head is not bigger than the unchanged diameter of the hat, you shouldn’t have a problem since the elastic cord will help make smaller adjustments.
